A chamada teologia da prosperidade impregnou os sectores da Igreja em vários países. Isto gerou uma enorme reacção negativa da sociedade à Igreja e desvirtuou profundamente a mensagem do Evangelho. De que modo devem os sectores mais ortodoxos da Igreja reagir a isso? Parece-me que uma das testemunhas mais claras contra o “evangelho” herético da prosperidade é uma Igreja humilde, pronta a sacrificar-se e a sofrer pela causa do verdadeiro Evangelho. E, com essa finalidade, precisamos de uma teologia bíblica robusta que fale de sofrimento e da soberania de Deus. Então, creio que os pastores deveriam abordar nas suas pregações o tema do sofrimento, através de uma abordagem saudável da verdade de que Deus é mais glorificado em nós quando nos contentamos Nele. E a grandeza do Seu valor brilha mais reluzentemente quando esse contentamento é sustentado por meio do sofrimento e não da prosperidade.
