The Cartesian paradigm was based on a belief in the certainty of scientific knowledge, which had been clearly stated by Descartes. In the new paradigm it is recognized that all scientific concepts and theories are limited and approximate. Science can never provide any complete and definitive understanding. Scientists do not deal with truth (in the sense of a precise correspondence between the description and the described phenomena); they deal with limited and approximated descriptions of reality.

E por fim, sobre a escuridão dos telhados lustrosos, a luz fria da manhã tépida raia como um suplício do Apocalipse. É outra vez a noite imensa da claridade que aumenta. E outra vez o horror de sempre — o dia, a vida, a utilidade fictícia, a atividade sem remédio. In our age I think it would be fair to say that the ease with which a scientific theory assumes the dignity and rigidity of fact varies inversely with the individual’s scientific education. In discussion with wholly uneducated audiences I have sometimes found matter which real scientists would regard as highly speculative more firmly believed than many things within our real knowledge; the popular imago of the Cave Man ranked as hard fact, and the life of Caeser or Napoleon as doubtful rumour. We must not, however, hastily assume that the situation was quite the same in the Middle Ages. The mass media which have in our time created a popular scientism, a caricature of the true sciences, did not exist. Uma realidade de 200%

Deus é perfeitamente unificado como um Deus, e no entanto, Deus é perfeitamente diversificado nas três pessoas do Pai, do Filho e do Espírito Santo. Há unidade e diversidade na realidade absoluta. Não há um Deus que escolhe revelar-se em três maneiras de modo a criar uma aparência de diversidade, e não há três pessoas que escolhem unir-se e cooperar de modo a criar uma aparência de serem unificadas. A realidade original é 100% unificada e 100% diversificada. É uma realidade de 200% que não pode ser compreendida pela simples lógica.  Aqui está um provérbio que inventei para capturar a essência desta realidade: Deus sozinho é Deus, e Deus não é sozinho (God alone is God, and God is not alone) . Não podes fazer esta afirmação sobre outro Deus ou perfeição original. Tu podes dizer Buda sozinho é Buda, e ficamos por aí. O resto é silêncio. Tu podes dizer Krishna sozinho é Krishna e Alá sozinho é Alá, mas novamente, o resto é silêncio. Se o Deus do terceiro círculo quer falar com alguém...

Anger is always an attack on the brother's life, for it refuses to let him live and aims at his destruction. Jesus will not accept the common distinction between roghteous indignation and unjustifiable anger. The disciple must be entirely innocent of anger, because anger is an offense against both God and his neighbour. Every iddle word which we think so little of betrays our lack of respect for our neighbour, and shows that we place ourselves on a pinnacle above him and value our own lives higher than his. The angry word is a blow struck at our brother, a stab at his heart: it seeks to hit, to hurt and to destroy. A deliberate insult is even worse, for we are then openly disgracing our brother in the eyes of the world, and causing other to despise him. With our hearts burning with hatred, we ssek to annihilate his moral and material existence. We are passing judgement on him, and that is urder. And the murderer will himself be judged.

O homem nuclear

O homem nuclear é aquele que compreende que os seus poderes criativos contêm o potencial da autodestruição. Ele apercebe-se de que, nesta era nuclear, vastos e novos complexos industriais permitem ao homem produzir numa hora o que outrora levava anos a produzir, mas compreende igualmente que estas mesma indústrias perturbaram o equilíbrio ecológico e, através da poluição atmosférica e sonora, contaminaram o seu próprio ambiente. O homem nuclear conduz automóveis, ouve telefonia e vê televisão, mas perdeu a capacidade de compreender o funcionamento dos instrumentos de que se serve. Vê à sua volta uma tal variedade e abundância de objectos úteis que a escassez já não lhe motiva a vida, mas ele anda simultâneamente às apalpadelas à procura de uma direcção e em busca de sentido e de objectivo. Durante este processo, ele sofre do conhecimento inevitável de que o seu tempo é o tempo em que se tornou possível ao Homem destruir não só a vida mas também a possibilidade de renascimento, não só...
